What is Laser Therapy?

Laser Therapy delivers specific red infrared wavelengths of laser light to induce a therapeutic effect within the body. These include increased circulation, decreased swelling, reduction of pain and enhanced tissue repair. Laser therapy has been used in Europe since the 1970's and was cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2002. Laser Therapy is often used in conjunction with other forms of treatment, including physical therapy and following surgery. Other healing modalities are complementary and can be used with laser to increase the effectiveness of the treatment.

Benefits of Laser Therapy

Laser Therapy is proven to biostimulate tissue repair and growth. Laser Therapy accelerates the healing process by decreasing inflammation, pain and scar tissue formation. In the management of chronic and acute pain, Laser Therapy can provide dramatic results.

Therapeutic Effects & Cellular Response

During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain. As the injured area returns to normal, function is restored and pain is relieved. During Laser Therapy the infrared laser light interacts with tissues at the cellular level, and metabolic activity increases within the cell, improving the transport of nutrients across the cell membrane. This initiates the increase production of cellular energy (ATP) that leads to a cascade of beneficial effects, increasing cellular function and health.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.) Does it hurt? What does treatment feel like?

There is little or no sensation during treatment. Occasionally, the patient feels mild, soothing warmth, or tingling. Areas of pain or inflammation may be sensitive briefly before pain reduction.

2.) Are there any side effect or associated risks?

During more than twenty years of use by healthcare providers all over the world, very few side effects have ever been reported. Occasionally some old injuries or pain syndromes may be aggravated for a few days, as the healing response is more active after treatment.

3.) How many laser treatments does it take?

Daily sessions for 3 days then every other day for 3-9 more sessions.

4.) Is Laser Therapy covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, insurance companies are reluctant to adopt emerging therapies and proactive health. They consider Laser Therapy investigational and there is no valid CPT code for the treatment which is needed to bill your insurance company.
